Kowloon Walled City Park, Kowloon
In 1847, Chinese officials built a new town, Kowloon Walled City, with thick wall and big cannons to better defend Kowloon Peninsula against the British Army on Hong Kong Island.
British Army occupied the fortress-like walled city in 1899 and expelled the Chinese officials and soldiers.
Although China was unable to hold the walled city anymore, the Hong Kong Colonial Government did not manage the area after the retreat of British Army.
It was because the area was still under the rule of China according to the treaty between China and Britain.
The area gradually became a big squatter area with 500 unauthorized buildings housing 50,000 residents!
Today travelers can visit the redeveloped and beautiful Kowloon Walled City Park.
It takes about 20 mins walk to go to Kowloon Walled City Park from Sung Wong Toi MTR Station Exit B3.
To learn the history, experience local culture and see the nice garden easily, you can book the easy Kowloon private tour programme.

Tai Po Man Mo Temple, The New Territories
British Army expelled the Chinese officials in Kowloon Walled City as the officials could not appease the restive native people in the New Territories.
The indigenous people were afraid of the British takeover of the New Territories in 1899.
So the native village elders met at the center of the Tai Po New Market, Man Mo Temple, to discuss and prepare their ill-fated fight against the British Army.
They also had a failed negotiation with the representative of the colonial government Henry May in the temple.
Travelers can still see the smoky Man Mo Temple and crowded Tai Po New Market today.
The railway station, which made the market thrived, has been revitalized to be the Hong Kong Railway Museum.
It takes about 30 mins walk to go to Tai Po Man Mo Temple from Tai Po Market MTR Station.
If travelers want to visit Tai Po, you can request Frank the tour guide to fine-tune the easy New Territories private tour itinerary for you.
