5 pro travel packing tips
Thank you to Eliza Brooks <eliza@linkbytes.net> for this guest blog. She is a recent graduate, marketing intern, passionate blogger and frequent traveler.
Nothing beats the feeling of having to take out your favorite luggage, duffel, or backpack for an exciting trip.
But a lot of people still haven’t figured out an efficient way to pack their stuff. I’m here to share my top 5 tips for packing like a pro.
1.Create a checklist
I didn’t set out to create a checklist for what to bring when traveling but as I traveled more and more, both for work and for leisure, I slowly compiled a list of the most essential things I need to bring with me on my journeys. I find that packing is so much easier and quicker with this list.
And depending on my trips, I just add or take out a few items. I keep this list in my phone’s note app at all times and refer to it every time I’m set for a trip.
As a tip, make sure you create the list yourself instead of copying what others have on theirs since everyone has their own necessary items to bring on their trips.
2.Get a good piece of luggage or duffel
I realized early on that wheeled luggage is not for me. I like being mobile and having a duffel or backpack allows me to sprint across the airport when my flight is on its last boarding call.
Whether you like using wheels or a trusty backpack, make sure you get one that is sturdy and made from good materials. You have to keep in mind that this will be your travel pack and will be subjected to a lot of dings and bangs, especially in baggage handling.
You also want to get a waterproof one should you have to face foreign streets in the middle of a storm.
3.Packing cubes are your friends
When I was younger, I really didn’t see the point of packing cubes. I thought they were only adding unnecessary things to my already overflowing bag.
Boy, was I wrong. Packing cubes are not only good items to help you organize your things but they also free up much-needed space in your bag or luggage. It also makes unpacking a breeze.
I like to keep a set of 3 or 4 cubes in various sizes. One for shirts and t-shirt, another for my pants and shorts, one for my underwear and socks, and the last one for other essentials which are often cords, chargers, and another cabling I need in my trips.
4.Pack an extra bag
I always make it a point to bring an extra bag with me when I travel. It has to be small, light, and portable since you won’t be using it in the first part of your trip.
But the moment you get to your destination, you’ll realize that you need a bag to haul your stuff while you go exploring the city or use it to buy groceries for longer trips.
You can also use the bag as a laundry bag when you’re on your way home. You can use it to pack your shoes to avoid dirt getting everywhere inside your luggage. Or to take with you to a Heavy Tow Truck Service when your are in need.
5. Roll your clothing
And lastly, you want to roll your clothing instead of just stacking them up on top of each other. Rolling shirts and pants are a great way to free up space in your bag and far easier to pack clothing into packing cubes, not to mention your clothes will have far lesser wrinkles.
As a bonus, I like to roll outfits together. I plan my outfits for each day of my trip and then roll them together as I pack. This way, I don’t have to sift through my clothes to pick which ones to wear and it helps me keep track of which pieces I can bring with me on my trips.
