TIY (tour it yourself) the cattle-related places in East Kowloon

Visit East Kowloon’s cattle-related places by yourselves

Travelers can find a lot of cattle-related places in the map of Hong Kong.

All of their names have the sound “Ngau” (牛, cattle).

Most of them are in the New Territories and the rural areas.

Frank the tour guide is going to show travelers the cattle related places in the urban East Kowloon.

Travelers may book Frank the tour guide’s Lantau Island private tour to go to see the real, cute and happy cattle under the Big Buddha, near the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car Terminus and on the South Lantau Road.

Ngau Chi Wan (Cattle Pond Bay)

Ngau Chi Wan means “Cattle Pond Bay” in English.

Originally, it was called Ngau Si Wan, which means “Cattle Dung Bay”.

It was native people’s cattle grazing land.

Hong Kong citizens mostly call the place as Choi Hung (which means rainbow in English) now because of the Choi Hung MTR Station and the Choi Hung Public Housing Estate.

The old name of Cattle Pond Bay was Cattle Dung Bay.

There is no more cowboy today.

But the rare old village in the urban area, Ngau Chi Wan Village, still exists.

Apart from the houses for the residents, there is a big outdoor wet market behind the archway of the village.

Hong Kong SAR Government is going to demolish the village and develop the public housing in the near future.

The famous Choi Hung Estate is opposite to the old village.

A lot of young locals and tourists flock there to take photos for the old public housing buildings, which are decorated by all colors of rainbow.

Some residents “have a cow” because some naughty amateur photographers occupy the basketball court and sneak in the residential buildings to disturb their daily life.

Visitors should behave when they TIY.

Apart from taking instagrammable photos, visitors can see the award-winning housing design and the old local shops quietly.

Ngau Tau Kok (Cattle Head Horns)

Ngau Tau Kok (Cattle Head Horns) got its name because the place’s original shore line looked like a pair of cattle horn.

The interesting coastline has disappeared because of land reclamation.

Today only the Ngau Tau Kok MTR Station and Ngau Tau Kok Road keep the origin of the place name.

However, if visitors want to TIY the famous Lower Ngau Tau Kok Public Housing Estate, please alight at the Kowloon Bay MTR Station.

Although the resettlement building, where Hong Kong China Olympic bronze medalist in track cycling Sara Lee lived, has been rebuilt, there is a Heritage Gallery to show the history of the resettlement estate and residents’ life in the past.
