See the view at Victoria Peak in the mid-1990s through the screenshots of the soap opera
It is interesting to see the past Hong Kong through history books, old movies and drama series.
When Frank the tour guide watched the rerun of the long soap opera, A Kindred Spirit, Frank took some screenshots, which show the view at Victoria Peak in the mid-1990s.

Frank is going to share his discoveries from those screenshots, the skyscrapers of Hong Kong, reclamation works and new malls at the Peak in the mid-1990s.
Of course travelers can join Frank’s Hong Kong Island private car tour to visit Victoria Peak easily.

Screenshots show Victoria Peak’s great view and facilities in the mid-1990s
Skyscrapers were the main elements for Victoria Peak’s good view in the mid-1990s.
At that moment, the tallest building was the 374m, 78-floor and pagoda-like Central Plaza.

The triangular shape building should be the tallest clock tower in the world as it has the LIGHTIME, which changes color every 15 mins at night to show the time, at the top.

Up till today, people can TIY, tour Central Plaza building yourselves, by going to its 46th floor to see the Victoria Harbor view.

View from the Central Plaza 46th floor observation deck.
However, the second tallest 367m and 70-story Bank of China Tower, which has a distinctive shape and popular fung shui story related to HSBC Main Building (for more, please browse Frank’ another post), is more famous than the Central Plaza.

Actually Hong Kong was preparing to build something more and higher in the mid-1990s.
Thus Hong Kong Government made new land on the northern part of Hong Kong Island and in the Western part of Kowloon through reclamations.

The reclamation works were two of the ten core projects of the New Airport Core Programme.
Today’s tallest building ICC, second tallest building IFCII were both constructed on the newly reclaimed land in West Kowloon and on Hong Kong Island respectively.

Government made land from the sea next to the General Post Office by reclamation. IFCII was built on that piece of new land in 2003.
One screenshot shows travelers were enjoying the Victoria Harbor view and taking photos on an outdoor lookout point.

The lookout was actually at the Peak Tower, which was rebuilt in 1997.
In 2006, the owner decided to renovate the building to add the dining and shopping space.
The lookout point was moved to the rooftop of the tower.
It is now 428m above the sea level and is called Sky Terrace 428!

The Cafe Deco Restaurant in the Peak Galleria Mall opposite to the Peak Tower was the actual filming location.

The filming location was Cafe Deco. The screenshot backdrop is Bank of China Tower. (red circle)
It occupied an area of more than 15,000 square feet.
It could accommodate more than 600 people.
It was the largest restaurant on the peak.
It has closed in 2016.

Frank the tour guide did bring large tour groups to enjoy dinner there in the past when Frank worked for the travel agents.
Now Frank still brings his own small private groups to the Victoria Peak to enjoy the amazing view during his Hong Kong Island private tours.
