Actually Murray House, Po Lin Monastery and Bank of China Building form a long and interesting story.

Po Lin Temple monk saved the souls of the victims in Murray House, which was later relocated to make way for new Bank of China Building 

Murray House was first built in 1846 in Central’s Murray Barracks.

 

About 100 years later, Japanese conquerors exploited the building as the military police headquarters during the occupation in WWII.

Local Chinese victims were tortured and executed.

About 4000 deaths laid the foundation for the haunted house story.

After WWII, colonial government changed Murray House to be different government offices.

In 1963, the local Chinese civil servants reported their stories of seeing ghosts inside to their British seniors.

When the ghost stories on newspaper aroused the public attention, colonial government decided to find the local Buddhist organization to try to “exorcise the ghosts”.

Actually that was the first time for the local Buddhist organization to cooperate with the British Colonial Government.

 

The famous Po Lin Monastery abbot, Fat Ho monk (left side in below photo), joined a team of senior monks to “save the souls of the victims” (video below).

The ceremonies in 1963 and in 1974 were successful!

In 1982, Colonial Government sold the Murray House location to Bank of China to build the new skyscraper.

 

Government decided to keep the historic Murray House by dismantling it into 3000 stone blocks and rebuilt Murray House at Stanley.

 

Now travelers can still pray at the old Po Lin Monastery (say hello to Big Buddha), see the Bank of China skyscraper and visit the Murray House in Frank the tour guide’s private tour service.
