Shanghai Street was the prosperous bund in the past
Shanghai Street is the old and long road in the Kowloon Peninsula.
It was the bund when it was first called Police Station Street before reclamation.
The Colonial Government renamed it as Shanghai Street to show Hong Kong’s close trade relationship with the rich Shanghai.
Shanghai Street was once very prosperous.
Its commercial hub status was just replaced by Nathan Road after WWII.
Today you can still tour Shanghai Street by yourself (TIY) to see the places of interest.
Travelers can also have Frank the tour guide’s Kowloon private car tour to see Shanghai Street, visit other nice sightseeing points and taste delicious local tea set.
TIY, Tour Shanghai Street by yourself
You can find the beautiful Kowloon Park, which was a British Army Barrack, at the end of Shanghai Street in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Center is located in the park and occupies two old barrack buildings.
It shows Hong Kong’s efforts on revitalizing the heritage buildings, like the Yau Ma Tei Theatre and Former Pumping Station of Water Supplies Department on Shanghai Street.
At the restored 618 Shanghai Street Mall in Mong Kok, you can see Shanghai Street’s brilliance in the past through the exhibits.
However the special architectural wonder, Yau Ma Tei Car Park Building, where the Gascoigne Road Flyover passes through, will be demolished in 2021 for the construction of the new highway.
Near the amazing cityscape, you can buy fresh fruits at the old but vibrant Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market.
You can buy some useful souvenirs at the kitchenware shops.
You can see the curios at the Buddhist/Taoist woodware sculpture shops.
You should not expect to get high quality jewelry at the small Jade Market at a very low price.
You may first visit the old Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau Temple in the late afternoon and then go shopping at the famous Temple Street Night Market in the evening.
