Transitional housing apartments’ limited supply shows Western travelers Chinese idiom and Hong Kong old saying

There is a short, new and colorful transitional housing block at Shek Kip Mei in Kowloon.

It is not far away from the Kowloon Road, which Frank just introduced in his blog.

There are 89 apartments for the poor public housing applicants to apply.

The limited supplies of transitional housing show you one Chinese idiom, “using one glass of water to try to put out the fire of a load of wood” (杯水車薪 pronounces as “bui sui ce sun”).

However the 89 successful applicants may use one Hong Kong old saying, “better than winning the Mark Six Lottery” (好過中六合彩 pronounces as “ho gor chung look hop choi), to describe their happiness.

Apart from this blog, Frank the tour guide shares Chinese culture and Hong Kong current affairs with Western clients during his easy Hong Kong private car tour service.

Use one transitional housing block to cater 90,000 households is impossible, but 89 successful applicants should be happier than the lottery winner

Hong Kong public rental housing waiting list is long.

There are about 250,000 applications waiting for the allocation.

Hong Kong SAR Government can just builds about 10,000 to 20,000 permanent public housing units a year.

Therefore more than 90,000 households have waited for the allocation for more than three years and they are getting government rental subsidy.

NGOs and government thus develop some temporary transitional housing projects by containers for them to apply.

Poor families may live in the old sub-divided cubicles, apply for the transitional housing made by containers and hope to live in the tall public housing for rental.

However, the supplies are just several hundreds apartments.

So this measure is not enough to cater their housing needs and just likes “using one glass of water to try to put out the fire of a load of wood”!

However, to the 89 successful applicants who will move to the temporary apartments, they may have a special feeling, “better than winning the Mark Six Lottery”.

Actually most of them are paying a high rental to live in the tiny sub-divided cubicles units with shared kitchen and washroom only in the old tenement buildings mostly without elevator.

According to this leasing advertisement, tenants need to pay for 3800-5900 HKD a month to rent the 11 to 15 meter square tiny sub-divided units with a lot of windows near the MTR Station!

If they really win the normal first prize with no jackpot of Hong Kong Mark Six Lottery, they may just get 2 to 3 million.

The prize money may just be enough to pay for the down payment of the new flat.

If they cannot get mortgage, they still cannot buy that flat.

Temporary apartments do offer the 89 households the cheaper, bigger, safer and easier living environment!
